South Africa - Day 2

  • Entered Kruger Park at 6:15 a.m. just after the gates opened and saw an elephant minutes later!
  • Drove through part of the park to a beautiful overlook of the Olifants River and valley, and scoped through our binoculars hippos sunning themselves on rocks in the river.
  • Toured the elephant history museum and saw many massive tusks.
  • Ate lunch and set up for our two-night stay in Balule Camp while vervet monkeys scampered around.
  • Embarked on an evening game drive and saw a hyena family roadside in a culvert -- two adults, two pups a couple months old, and two pups less than two weeks old.

  • Ate dinner of braai (barbecue) steak, corn, potato salad and cheesecake made by B, followed by drinks around the campfire while watching the hyena visitors.
  • Animals seen: baboon, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, hare scrub, hippo, hyena, impala, kudu, nyala, sable, steenbok, tree squirrel, vervet monkey, waterbuck, wildebeest, zebra.
  • Listened to hippos bellowing at night.
