South Africa - Day 3

  • Woke up early for our morning walk through the bush w/ two rangers and a few other visitors. We saw hippos in the river, impalas fairly close, various birds, leopard tracks and a kudu. Stopped for breakfast atop a hill which provided us with a fantastic view of the valley and giraffes in the distance.

  • Spent the rest of the day until dusk on safari in the gigantic national park. We drove through grassland while us girls sang Lion King songs, and we saw a lion, lioness and vultures next to a kill (and a hyena and jackal approached the area at one point), and a mating pair of lions roughly 15 feet from the car.

  • Ate dinner at camp of potjie (stew) and bread while we were visited once again by the hyenas.
  • Animals seen: baboon, buffalo, crocodile, elephant (herd w/ some babies, and later a HUGE bull running alongside the car towards a waterhole), giraffe, hippo, hyena, impala, jackal, kudu, leopard, leopard, monitor lizard, steenbok, terrapin, vervet monkey, waterbuck, white rhino, wildebeest, zebra.
